Your First Day as a Temp Worker: A Survival Guide
Starting a new temp job can be exciting and daunting. It’s an opportunity to build your resume, experience a new workplace and possibly get your foot in the door of a great company. If you’re nervous about starting a new temp job, you’re not alone. Luckily, there are steps you can take to ensure you’ll have a smooth first day on the job.
Prepare the Night Before
Set yourself up for success by getting organized the night before.
- Do your research. Take a few minutes to check out your new company’s online presence to get an idea of the culture.
- Get directions. By plugging everything into GoogleMaps, you can get a good sense of how long it will take to get there by car or by public transportation and which route is best to take. If you’re driving, make sure you know where you should park.
- Pack a lunch. When you’re running around getting ready in the morning, it can be time-consuming to pack a healthy lunch. A better option it to prepare the night before and grab your lunch on your way out the door.
- Pick your work outfit. A good rule of thumb for your first day is to dress better than suggested.
- Go to bed early. Make sure you get the sleep your mind and body need.
Arrive Early
There’s a reason the early bird gets the worm. On your first day, the last thing you want is to arrive flustered and panicked. Wake up early, eat breakfast and allow yourself ample time for your commute. Arrive at least 15 minutes early, but enter the building on time.
Introduce Yourself to Everyone
Because you’re a fresh face, now is your chance to make a great first impression. Do that by smiling when you meet new people, using eye contact and shaking their hands. Make it clear how happy and eager you are to be there.
Make Friends on Your Team
On your first day, try to connect with a fellow team member. Listen and keep any opinions to yourself. Show them you are friendly and approachable. Make an effort to learn a little about them and their role in the company.
Offer to Stay Late
Don’t run for the door at the end of the day, even if you are anxious to leave. Stay a little beyond your designated hours. And before you leave for the day, ask your boss or team members if they need you to stay late. You’ll impress your teammates with your dedication and commitment to the job.
As these tips show, being prepared and making a great first impression on your first day as a temp can help you cultivate a great new work environment. And if you’re looking for a temp job, remember our hiring experts are available for advice. Visit the Nesco Resource website to learn more.
